Astana, Kazakhstan
When Kazakhstan was able to declare its independence from the crumbling USSR, it made the major decision to create a new capital city. The old capital Almaty was replaced by the newly constructed Astana. This new capital city was built to be the glorious capital that the Kazakhstani people had dreamed of during long years of oppression.
Putrajaya, Malaysia
The city of Putrajaya was built from the ground up with the express purpose of decreasing the workload of Kuala Lumpur, the official capital of Malaysia. This smaller city to the south is well-connected by transit to its larger sister-city, making it easy for traveling bureaucrats. An important city despite its size it is referred to as the administrative center of the country.
Iqaluit, Canada
Iqaluit is a small and frigid city that is also the capital of the Canadian territory known as Nunavut. In fact, the city is so tiny that it is the smallest capital city in all of Canada. Formerly called Frobisher Bay, this city has seen decent increases in size since its creation in 1995 but it still remains under 10,000 residents.
King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is another Middle East country that is flush with oil money. The royal family set out to build a grand city near the country’s second-largest city, Jeddah. Today, the city is still under construction.
Navi Mumbai, India
After the major Indian city of Mumbai reached its saturation point, the country decided to build a planned city across the bay. What resulted is the largest planned city that the world has ever seen.
