The House in the Clouds

The House in the Clouds is basically a converted water tower located in the village of Thorpeness in Suffolk, England. The village of Thorpeness is a holiday village and it has another famous historical building like the Thorpeness Windmill. In fact, the water tower was originally built to receive water from the windmill before being converted into a house.

The water tower was built in 1923.

Some time later its appearance was changed to improve the looks of the building, disguising the water tank with the appearance of a weatherboard house to blend with Thorpeness’s houses in mock Tudor and Jacobean style. This change in design made the water tower as if it is floating above the trees, among the clouds. Therefore, it was named the House in the Clouds.

In 1979, the water tank was removed to fully convert the building into a house. The House in the Clouds is now a self-catering holiday accommodation.
