Ellen Jewett is a talented artist – sculptor, popular for her marvelous handmade sculptures. These sculptures look like fantasy creatures and she brings them to life with so much detail that it’s surreal. Using a combination of animal-inspired ideas, plants and mechanical parts and she finishes these off with marvelous and beautiful designs. “Natural history surrealist sculpture.” Is how Jewett would describe it. Her sculptures clearly represent the background in anthropology, caring for exotic animals, the illustration of the medical diagrams, and still- motion animation. You have to admire her imaginative mind when you see her works, because even though she draws a lot of ideas from her background; the embellishments she incorporates into every sculpture only confirms the existence of a creative mind.
She gets most of her inspiration from nature and in so doing avoids using toxic and unnatural materials for her works. No paints, shiny or glazed finishes, she settles for a natural look and uses locally available materials. She is based in Canada.
Her use of special materials to combine and create these sculptures does more than beautify because as she puts it –it makes her work exclusive from the commercially available sculptures out there.
Her use of natural materials to create these sculptures gives each one a unique look and every out of this world sculpture she creates stands out as an original creation.
