Meet the South Sudanese model Nyakim Gatwech, who keeps teaching people not to be afraid of the dark. With her fierce determination and deeply pigmented skin, Nyakim keeps breaking the barriers of conventional beauty, and also encourage others to replicate the same. Gatwech, a 24-year-old icon of burgeoning fashion now lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she is very proud of her melanin and makes sure the whole world is aware of that. “My chocolate skin is elegant, so is what I represent…..A nation filled with warriors,” captioned on one of her photographs on Instagram, which has over 10 thousand likes each. She gave the details of her experience with an Uber driver who suggested she should try ‘bleaching’ her skin – but she responded by laughing. “It will be hard for you to believe the kind of question and looks I get for having this skin.” In the fashion industry, Gatwech is an advocate for diversity and also a voice for Black all around the world. She has been tagged “Queen of the Dark,” a title which she happily accepts. “Black is beautiful, bold and can be likened to gold…. Don’t let your African soul be damaged by American standards.” Love your skin, no matter what shade or color it may be!
