With the increased usage of social media, unfortunately, the meaning of “beauty” came to another point. This started with the Barbie dolls played in the childhood, continued with the films and TV series, then models being always fit and thin. Now we see the women feel they should be fit, so they try to get drugs, drink detox waters to lose weight. The aim is not to feel healthy, it is all about being thin to be accepted by the public! Especially on Instagram, every woman tries to prove herself by showing her body.
The filters in the applications also affected the image of “no-makeup” look. Now we are all away from the natural faces, sports clothes. We want to show our shapes to feel better.
Olga Kamenetskaya is a Ukrainian artist realizing this situation, so she wanted to make a difference. And she started to remove the makeups of dolls and repaints to show they would look more natural.
“I don’t like when the new face of the doll is ideal and perfectly symmetrical, it makes it lifeless. I always deliberately leave some flaw that may not be noticeable to everyone, but [gives] the doll invisible charisma. Perhaps, this flawed beauty is the message that my dolls carry.” are the words of Kamenetskaya proving what is the point she started doing this work.
