The Putra Mosque is the principal mosque of Putrajaya, Malaysia. The mosque is located on Putra Square, adjacent to the Putrajaya Lake, which is a man-made lake designed to act as a natural cooling system for the city as well as to accommodate fishing, water sports, and water transport. The Putra Mosque was completed in 1999. It takes its name after the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj. It is one of the few pink mosques in the world.
One part of the mosque is on solid ground while the other part is built on stilts over water to make it look like the mosque is floating. This is a favored technique in Malaysian architecture and can be seen in some other mosques like the Malacca Straits Mosque.
The mosque was constructed with rose-tinted granite. The most distinctive feature of the mosque is the patterned pink dome, made of pink and white granite tiles.
The mosque is 50 meters long with a minaret of 116 meters, making the minaret of Putra Mosque one the tallest in the world. The minaret was inspired by Sheikh Omar Mosque in Baghdad, which was built in the 12th century. The minaret of Putra consists of 5 sections, representing the 5 Pillars of Islam.
