Malacca Straits Mosque

Built on a man-made island called Malacca Island (locally known as Pulau Melaka), Malacca Straits Mosque is located in Malaysia. It overlooks the Malacca Strait, which is one of the busiest straits in the world. It gets its name from the strait as well. The mosque was opened to the public in 2006 by the Supreme Ruler of Malaysia. It is also known as Masjid Selat Melaka.

The Malacca Straits Mosque is built on stilts. Especially during high tide, when the water level rises, the mosque gives the impression of floating above the ocean.

The mosque’s architecture is a mixture of Middle Eastern and Malay craftsmanship. The mosque’s structure has two intersecting archways leading to the main entrance. The facade is adorned with stained glass windows featuring traditional Islamic motifs. The minaret, which is 30 meters tall, is also used as a lighthouse.
