The Square Head, known as La Tête au Carré in French, is a habitable sculpture in Nice, French. In fact, it is the first habitable sculpture in the world.
The sculpture of the Square Head is Sacha Sosno and the architect is Yves Bayard. Sosno was one of the main artists of the New Realist movement in France.
It was inaugurated in 2002 with the title ”Thinking Inside The Box” and became the first inhabited sculpture in the world. The unusual building is about 30 meters high and 14 meters wide. It differs greatly from traditional French architecture, so some of the locals complain about its different visuals. But the Square Head’s unique contemporary look is what makes it a tourist spot.
There are seven stories in the cube-shaped building in the form of a human head: four of them have offices while the other three are filled with books.
Although there are no windows, the sculpture is covered with perforated aluminum mesh so the people in the building can see outside. In contrast, the inside can’t be seen from the outside. It now houses the central library administration and is closed to the public. At night, the building is illuminated and changes color according to the theme of the events.
