The Nevermind photo shoot, conducted in 1991, remains etched in the annals of rock and roll as one of the most iconic sessions of all time. This pivotal moment captured the essence of Nirvana, the renowned grunge rock band, as they embarked on their groundbreaking album, ‘Nevermind.’ Widely regarded as one of the greatest music albums ever created, ‘Nevermind’ rose to prominence not only for its remarkable sound but also for its distinctive album art, featuring a captivating image of a naked baby swimming in a pool.
“Okay, throw the baby in the pool now.” With those words, uttered by photographer Kirk Weddle, 4-month-old Spencer Elden was on his way to fame as the baby on the cover of Nirvana’s chart-topping album, Nevermind
“The record label didn’t consider this a very successful shoot,” photographer Kirk Weddle says of the underwater photos he took of Nirvana to complement the cover he shot for Nevermind. “When I had shot the album cover, I was like the golden child. But with these, they were like, ‘We hate ’em.'” Weddle told Rolling Stone. On the 25th anniversary of the shoot back in 2016, Weddle put on an exhibition of around 200 outtakes from what he took that day in collaboration with an Austin gallery.
