Lyn Slater is a professor at Fordham University. One day during New York Fashion Week, Slater was heading near the Lincoln Center to have lunch with a friend. All of a sudden, a group of foreign journalists start gathering around her. They mistook her for a fashion icon, which drew lots of spectators to gather soon after. Slater blogged about this encounter as being the “Accidental Icon.”
Slater has never let society’s standards of ageism and fashion determine what she is going to wear. She has always denounced discrimination against people based on their age, whether it is in the fashion industry or any other industry. Slater believes people should wear what they’re comfortable wearing, regardless of their age.
“Fashion and my style help me struggle against that invisibility that comes with age,” Lyn told Bright Side
She was once asked by Refinery29 about the old notion of ‘dressing for one’s age,’ and her response was clear
“…We use language to control people’s behavior… This phrase is a way of putting older women in their place”
“I’m certain that if you feel comfortable in your own clothes, it’s completely irrelevant how old you are”
After being “discovered,” Slater was given a contract by Elite London to be a model for their company.
She has already modeled for brands like Uniqlo and Mango.
Her Instagram page has her modeling pictures posted up on there. She has already generated more than 132,000 followers.
