Stockholm Metro: World’s Longest Art Exhibit

Solna Centrum Station

Solna Centrum was opened in 1975, and it represents a political statement with the colors red and green. The artists Karl-Olov Björk and Anders Åberg wanted to illustrate some of the most debated societal topics in Sweden in the 1970s: the environment, the depopulation of rural areas, and deforestation.

Tensta Station

Tensa station was opened in 1975. The artist Helga Henschen, together with Arne Sedell and her brother Lars, spent over a year decorating the wall of Tensta to celebrate and welcome the immigrants of the Tensa district. The wall is full of phrases from different languages, animals, plants, and drawings representing kinship, solidarity, etc.

Thorildsplan Station

Thorildsplan is one of the only three outdoor stations in Stockholm. It was built in 1952 but the pixelated artwork by Lars Arrhenius is a recent edition. The artists drew inspiration from Thorildsplan’s surroundings like the rondos, elevated sidewalks, and street crossings. All these elements reminded him of nostalgic video games so he decorated the station with Mario’s mushrooms, clouds, pipes, etc.
