Rainbow Village of Taiwan

Rainbow Village was created by a veteran named Huang Yung-Fu, also known as ”Grandpa Rainbow”. The colorful village is located in Taichung, Taiwan. Originally, it was a military dependents’ village but later, the settlement was converted into street art.

Many houses became rundown and families started to leave the village after receiving compensation from the developers who wanted to buy the lands. However, Huang Yung-Fu continued to stay in the village along with the remaining 11 homes. Whether to pass the time or save the houses in the area from demolition, he started to paint them. To fix the rundown look of the village, he used vibrant colors to freshen the area. Over the years his art has spread over the remaining houses in the village, which once contained more than 1000 houses. He painted the walls, the doors, and even the ground.

When the local university students discovered Huang’s efforts they campaigned to save the village. After this, the village got the nickname ”Rainbow Village”. Authorities decided to preserve the area after its growing popularity, and in the future, it might become a designated cultural area.
