Nusantara, officially known as the Capital City of Nusantara, is the future capital of Indonesia, scheduled to be inaugurated on 17 August 2024. The move is in part to relieve pressure on traffic-clogged Jakarta, which is sinking, polluted and crowded. Designed by Indonesian studio URBAN+, the city will contain the state palace, the House of Representatives, government offices, and housing for civil servants. It is being designed with the aim of having an initial population of 500,000 people. Nusantara will be located between North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara on the Indonesian part of Borneo, 870 miles away from the current capital.

It’s worth noting that it’s the capital that is moving, not the whole of Jakarta (as if it was possible to somehow relocate a city of 10 million+ people). The project is estimated to be at $35 billion USD and will be finished in 5 phases, with phase 1 started in August 2022. Almost 150,000-200,000 workers from around Indonesia participated in this project with an additional workforce around the Nusantara region to ensure participation of local workers. The project will be fully finished in 2045 with Phase 5 being the last. The government has set aside 180,000 hectares (445,000 acres) of land for the planned city. The state will fund 19 percent of the project’s cost, with the rest coming from public-private partnerships and private investment.
