Craigievar Castle: The Pink Castle That Inspired Disney

Craigievar Castle is a pinkish harled castle located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and it was built in the 17th century. It was the seat of the Clan Sempill and the Forbes family resided here for 350 years until 1963. The castle had fallen into decay in the early 18th century and was going to be demolished. However the city architect of Scotland advised against it, therefore the castle was restored. The walls of the castle were not pink originally, but to match the exterior finish with the color of the granite detailing, pigments were added to the harling and the result was a pinkish color. In 1963 the property was given to The National Trust for Scotland.

Craigievar Castle exemplifies the Scottish Baronial architectural style.

The walls of the fortified seven-story castle were decorated with detailed turrets, corbels, and gargoyles. These elements, together with the scenery of the foothills and the pinkish color of the walls, resemble a fairytale look. In fact, the world-renowned cartoonist and animator Walt Disney is believed to be inspired by the Castle in his works.
