Built by the Berber tribes of Souss in the 16th century, the apiary of Inzerki is the largest traditional and probably the oldest apiary in the world. It produces the finest honey in Morocco thanks to its location at an altitude of 1000 m on a sunny southern slope with plenty of flowers and plants as well as relatively stable climate. Traditional cylindric hives made of woven reeds or tree barks are placed in a staggered order in cells. This prevents the overlapping of hives and aggressiveness between the bees.
In 1990 and 1996, heavy floods damaged the apiary of Inzerki and several huts collapsed. This caused the abandonment of the house and reconstruction of modern beehives in 2005. Despite the efforts of restoration and recognition by UNESCO in 2006, the apiary is not yet active as it used to be.
