Zentralmoschee Köln is designed in a neo-Ottoman architectural style, with partly glass walls, two minarets, and a dome. It is one of the biggest mosques in Europe and the largest mosque in Germany. The 48,000 square foot (4,500 m2) mosque aims to house 2,000 to 4,000 worshippers.

Purchasing a one-acre site in 2009 on Mill Road, Marks Barfield Architects was appointed to design the mosque with a world-leading expert in religious architecture named Professor Keith Critchlow.
