The Union of Romanian Architects
Located in heart of the Romanian capital city, the Union of Romanian Architects building was originally built in the late 19th century in the French Renaissance architectural style. When it was agreed the building was to be renovated, the architects were required to build on top of the original structure, since it was a historical landmark. The end result shows how much architecture has changed over the centuries, both in style and in preferred materials.

Congress Square, Boston
As one of the first adaptive reuse projects in Boston to add a substantial vertical addition without resorting to a “façade-ectomy,” the 530,000 square-foot Congress Square reused an immense amount of embodied carbon by extending the life of the existing structure of these buildings. Initially constructed in the early 20th century as three separate bank buildings, Arrowstreet’s design strategically reconnects the current and adds a seven-story addition, designed to float above the historic architecture perceptually.
Loo Windmill
The Loo Windmill dates back to 18th century. It had been abandoned for decades, standing in the middle of a field, its walls partly caved in.
Old walls were kept as authentic as possible; inside the mill, a new wooden loadbearing glazed structure was erected that now lies over the existing walls. Limestone walls form a coat for the modern interior room.
The mill has four levels, with the height of the ceilings matching that of the old structure.

The Fahle House
CSAV Headquarters on Sotomayor Square in Valparaíso, Chile

Both are part of the CSAV headquarters. Since Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores was founded in 1872, it has become one of the world’s largest shipping and freight transportation companies. In 2014 it merged with Hapag-Lloyd in Germany.
