After watching series of reality TV programmes, Melbourne artist Phil Ferguson got inventive with his crochet skills – designing and creating certain foods into ridiculously funny headwear. The designs are intentionally over the top, with many staple food types getting recreating into a garment for the head, including a pizza slice, bacon, eggs and much more. Speaking of the reality TV that got Phil’s creative juices flowing, “I started watching the TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race and got a real appreciation for drag,” he explains. “I was thinking of different sorts of hats that I could create a character with.” His crocheting abilities were also completely self-taught, using the power of online videos to teach him. You would think that such grand pieces would take a while to finish, yet Phil never takes longer than a day to complete one. It couldn’t be simpler in fact; all he needs to do is picture the food, get the right materials and starts the crocheting process. “I don’t plan or sketch, I just do. I usually sit there for hours on end just so I can finish one hat in a sitting.”
After completing one, he uploads them to his Instagram page where his brilliant facial expressions really add to the overall madness of the head gear. Phil Ferguson Instagram via [Instagram blog]
