An artist from California, Loren Stump, has been his own teacher and inspiration and has created some of the best creations at murrine (also known as murrina or murrini). Murrine is a 4000 years old technique native to Middle East where the patterns or colored images are made in a glass cane and it can be seen across the cross-sections. It comprises of placing different layers of colors and molten glass and then stretching it till it takes the shape of a rod. Once the rod is cooled, it is sliced like a bread and each piece would reveal extensive details.
Loren Stump has been doing it since the past 40 years and has mastered the technique of murine. His creations involve the manipulation of two dimensional slices to take forms of a three dimensional work. Recently, he created his masterpiece known as Virgin on the Rocks, an adaptation of Leonardo da Vinci’s work. It fetches prices of as high up to $5000.
