An art-lover should go to Naples’ historic center and visit Cappella Sansevero, a small-sized chapel/museum, to see some perfectly carved marble sculptures.
The Veiled Christ / Giuseppe Sanmartino, 1753
Cappella Sansevero is a place where you can find masterpieces by many of the notable Italian sculptors from the 18th century. Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero and the chapel’s patron, were one of the primary factors that affected the arrangements, aspects, and themes of the pieces of art and the chapel.
It is an unequaled place for the world’s artistic legacy. The most famous and notable piece in this museum is Veiled Christ, a magnificently carved sculpture of Jesus Christ lying dead with fine details such as crucifixion marks on the hands and feet. With Anatomical Machines downstairs and the ceiling, the Glory of Paradise painted by Francesco Maria Russo, this Masonic-inspired baroque chapel, Cappella Sansevero is a must-see museum, full of extraordinarily realistic marble sculptures having beauty and divinity in them.
Disillusion / Francesco Queirolo, 1753-54
