An artist has no limits when it comes to their canvas, as evidenced by the recently revived trend known as the hobo nickel. This involves transforming small coinage into beautiful works of art by meticulously engraving them by hand.
While this type of art has been around since the 18th century and was particularly popular in the United States (where the buffalo nickel was saw as the best coin for the job due to its thickness) it saw a decline in 1980s.
Now UK-based artist Shaun Hughes is part of a large group of artists that have begun a mini-revival of the hobo nickel. His work is featured on a number of different coins that each have different styles to their designs.
His floral patterns in particular look visually stunning when engraved onto a contemporary coin. Whether subtly weaving through the coin or being a striking focal point for it, the incredible detail and precision required makes them all the more impressive.
Currently selling on eBay, his work helps to add an unbelieve sense of style, beauty, and elegance to an everyday piece of currency. The coins are never convoluted with too many engravings, allowing you to see the original style of the coin but with the added visual design.
