Xizi Tower: Tree Grows on Top of a Tower

The Xizi Tower was built in 1838 in the Wangcheng District of Changsha, Hunan, China. It is 12 meters (39 ft) tall and consists of five stories. In ancient times, the tower served as a place where mourners burned their offerings of paper prayers and gifts for the afterlife. The most prominent feature of this hexagonal-based stone tower is the Celtis Sinensis tree on top of it. According to one speculation, a bird lived on top of the tower, leaving a seed on top of it. Over the years, the seed broke out of the soil and became a tree whose roots grow all the way down to the ground inside the tower.
