Church of Corbera D’ebre: Balance Between In and Out

Destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, the old church of Corbera D’ebre today serves as a multipurpose hall after an exceptional restoration by Ferran Vizoso Architecture. The restoration works included the strengthening of the church walls and a transparent roof that gives an outdoor feeling to the structure. The main purpose behind this restoration was to regain the structure for public use while preserving its appearance. In this way, the ruins of the Church of Corbera D’ebre would remain a symbol of the Battle of the Ebro (1938).

The transparent cover of ETFE protects the walls from further deterioration that might result from atmospheric events. It also preserves that natural balance of ruins between interior and exterior spaces. The fact that the roof allows sunrays and breeze while protecting from rain or snow creates a space that feels outdoors while actually being indoors. Moreover, the addition of sand pavements consolidates the historic church’s half natural and half artificial situation.
