Japanese artist Hirotoshi Ito’s river stone sculptures are befuddling. He seems to animate them with new life, causing even the most stubborn materials to take on a unique personality.
By adding zippers, he transforms the stones into unlikely wallets, grotesque, smiling mouths, and sprouting gardens. The work is spectacular and surreal, causing the stones to appear soft and malleable.
In addition to his work with river stones, Ito also creates odd sculptures of shirts, melting ice cream bars, and dismembered legs. Find more of his work through is website.
