Created by a group of young architects and designers, Rapana is the first street library in Varna, Bulgaria. Because young people seem to live their lives around their digital environment, very few seem interested in reading a book.
Architects and Designers Yuzdzhan Turgaev, Boyan Simeonov, Ibrim Asanov, and Mariya Aleksieva decided to create a street library to encourage reading!
The library is shaped like the shell of a sea snail because Varna is a seaside town that is known as “The marine capital of Bulgaria”.
The design is inspired by nature and it’s wonderful shapes. Its installation took into consideration the most important parts of the city including the sea and Varna’s locals. This abstract design goes from a single focal point to a semi-circle. It offers public space along with shelves for the books.
Rapana was created using parametric design tools from Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper. This gave the architects the ability to try different variations and shapes.
Using the software allowed the team to test over 20 variations while changing the number of horizontal and vertical wood pieces along with their width and height.
Staying within budget, the open library offers easy access for readers, plenty of sitting space along with a tiny stage for artists and lounging. The street library was constructed using 240 wooden pieces and is capable of holding 1,500 books!
