Each sculpture features a shrouded figure, carved in such a way that s/he is in modern clothing that shows off the fact that these are also going to be given modern messages. Take a look at one of his most popular creations, Ghost Girl, and see it for yourself.
Here we have a unique and beautiful combination of a ponytail. A mini skirt and modern top, and arms that are held behind the back. The girl’s face is downcast, and when the veil of shimmering (distracting) beads is pushed aside, there is a skeletal face peering downwards. This skeleton shows us vulnerability and the fact that she is dying a little behind the mask. It speaks to today’s themes of society’s pressures on “putting on a happy face”.
There are also scars on the girl’s arms, hidden behind her back so that you have to look close to see them. All speak to a hard past and a forgotten history that this girl must carry around with her for many years to come.
All of Francis’ work is like this and speaks to the struggle of the modern woman and a high-pressure world that is waiting for her.
