Designed to be a textile factory in 1896, Masia Freixa was converted into the private residence of the Catalan industrialist Josep Freixa between 1907 and 1910. This Gaudi-inspired building, designed by the Spanish architect Lluís Parellada Muncunill, is the most significant representative of Terrassenc modernism today.
The influence of Antoni Gaudi is apparent in the use of rounded arches, vaults, white walls, and the high tower. Nevertheless, Muncunill’s design is less detailed in comparison to Gaudi’s works. The original roof of Masia Freixa has a shiny gray look thanks to the pieces of glass added to the mortar. On the eastern side of the building, there is also a rotunda with two floors.
In 1959, the Terrassa City Council purchased the property, and its romantic gardens became the first public park in the city. Later, the structure served as the headquarters of the Music Conservatory of Terrassa for years. It has housed the Municipal Tourism Service and the local ombudsman since 2006.
