The Cave Churches of Goreme, Turkey
Göreme is one of the districts in the ancient Cappadocia region which comprised hundreds of cave churches. During the rule of the Byzantine Empire, monastic life was highly common due to several reasons from religious oppression to more practical reasons such as poverty and exemption from military service. There were various types of monastic life, and withdrawing into a secluded cave was one of them. Moreover, the soft topography of the region formed by ash and lava also enabled people to carve out caves to construct religious places more easily.
