Laguna Beach recently featured a striking art installation in November 2016 as part of the Art & Nature Festival commissioned by Laguna Art Museum.
Known as ‘1/4 Mile Arc’, the installation featured 250 stainless steel posts with mirrored surfaces that were placed even intervals for a quarter mile down Laguna Beach, creating a soft arc that catches some pretty stunning visual reflections along the coastline.
Created by Phillip K. Smith III, beach-goers could view the striking installation over a period of four days. The mirrored surface, which was achieved through polishing the stainless steel, caught various reflections throughout the day, from the setting sun in the horizon to the surfs in the water.
As a result, the posts achieved different visuals depending on the time of the day and where they were viewed from. For example, it was possible to view one massive reflection in all of the posts from afar, while other moments in the day saw them act much like a sun dial.
The creator of the piece describes the work as “a compression and expansion of reflection, light, and shadow,” which is brilliantly achieved through various movements of anyone viewing the piece.
