Sun Tower: A Harmonious Landmark of Art, Nature, and Community in Yantai

Rising 50 meters along the coast of Yantai, China, the Sun Tower by OPEN Architecture is an architectural marvel that intertwines natural elements with cultural purposes. The building’s unique conical form, inspired by a giant sundial, captures the sun’s path year-round, symbolizing Yantai’s historical connection to sun-worshipping. Constructed with Arup’s engineering expertise, the tower features dual-layered concrete shells, adding resilience and aesthetic depth to the structure.

Inside, visitors encounter a vibrant mix of community spaces: exhibition ramps, a theatre, a library, a cafe, and a viewing deck that frames uninterrupted views of the Yellow Sea. The theatre’s design amplifies ocean sounds, offering an immersive experience that connects visitors with nature. Additionally, the building’s perforated facade invites sunlight and sea breezes, optimizing energy use by reducing the need for artificial lighting and ventilation.

The Sun Tower’s alignment with celestial events—such as the summer solstice sunrise over Zhifu Island—underscores OPEN Architecture’s intent to reconnect people with nature and time. The open roof at the top allows rainwater to flow into an interior pool, crafting a water installation that further accentuates the natural ambiance.

Since its opening, the Sun Tower has attracted considerable public interest, standing as a symbol of environmental awareness and a beacon of inspiration for sustainable, community-oriented design.
