The Santuari de Montferri is a monument designed by the Catalan Modernist architect, sculptor, and painter Joseph Maria Jujol. The construction works started in 1926; however, the process had to stop due to the lack of funds in 1931. Later, a part of the structure suffered damage during the Spanish Civil War. The chapel remained in an unsettled condition until 1984. The Santuari de La Mare de Déu de Montserrat Chapel finally began operating in 1999.
Josep Maria Jujol is a Catalan Modernisme architect and sculptor who remained under the shadow of Antoni Gaudi. Jujol previously worked with Gaudi on several famous works including Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, and Park Güell.
The design of the Santuari de Montferri takes advantage of the uneven topography of Mt. Montserrat by advancing a part of the structure down the slope. Furthermore, the central spire, measuring 27 meters high, is surrounded by several different-sized domes imitating this rocky environment. The structure consists of one hundred and twenty catenary arches culminating in a central dome. The windows encircling the walls have hundreds of heart-shaped stained glass inlays. Additionally, dozens of metal gargoyles decorate the exterior.
