If you’re a camper or a hiker, you know all sorts of stuff about all of the dangerous plants and animals that you have to avoid to make sure that you aren’t going to be in pain or, worst of the worst, die.
Now, however, there is a tree that you need to add to your list, called the manchineel. It is found along the coast of Florida as well as other places in South America, and it is a deathly tree from it’s fruit to its bark.
The sweet apples that fall from it are deadly and the bark, branches and leaves can cause severe burns and such a strong allergic reaction that you will most likely die from it.
Smoke from burning the trees can also causes severe irritation to the skin and eyes, and can be deadly if inhaled, so don’t try using them for firewood.
This tree is dangerous if you touch it, stand under it for shelter from the rain, use it for firewood, etc.
There is no safe way to have anything to do with this tree, so make sure you stay away from it if possible. It’s not worth your life just to see if you can chance death, right?
So if you spot a manchineel tree, make sure to stay far away. Or this could happen to you:
Indians in the Caribbean used the tree’s sap coat their arrowheads in poison, and were known to tie their captives to the trunk when they wanted to ensure their particularly slow and painful demise. As if nature wasn’t frightening enough already, now we have to be afraid of trees!
